The GPS Matchup Rater was designed to identify offensive players with favorable or unfavorable matchups based on the areas of the field in which they generally earn opportunity.
To do this, and make a distinction between favorable and unfavorable, the tool analyzes a combination of a player’s offensive tendencies in comparison to the strengths and weaknesses of the defense he is opposing. A value is generated for each ‘zone’ of the field by multiplying the percentage of the player’s targets/pass/rushing attempts occurring in that zone by the opposing defenses Yards/Game allowed over Opponent Average from the same zone. Results from all zones are then added together and compared to an average value of 1.0 to generate a ‘Matchup Rating.’ Above-average results (Ratings >0%) represent matchups that are likely favorable, while below-average values (Ratings <0%) represent matchups that are more likely to be unfavorable.
