From a Historical Perspective: Are We Sure Garrett Wilson Targets Are Good Targets?

Garrett Wilson finished Week 5 with 22 targets. Since 2000, a wide receiver has had that many targets in a game only seven previous times.

Season Week Player Targets reFPOE PPR
2024 5 Garrett Wilson 22 -9.8 29.1
2015 9 Antonio Brown 23 8.7 47.6
2015 4 DeAndre Hopkins 22 -11.4 24.7
2013 7 Vincent Jackson 22 -2.2 35.8
2010 1 Roddy White 23 -13.8 24.1
2009 14 Brandon Marshall 28 3.2 53
2005 13 Chris Chambers 26 -1.2 44.8
2000 16 Terrell Owens 22 19.5 54.8

Wilson’s performance wasn’t the worst of the high-target outings — both DeAndre Hopkins and Roddy White were less efficient. But when you see the point totals some of these other games have produced, you can’t help but think that this was a bit of a missed opportunity for Wilson.

In many ways, Wilson’s career has been a series of missed opportunities. He has yet to have a season with positive FPOE. In fact he’s only had two games with positive FPOE since Week 3 of 2023.

To be sure, some of this is the fault of quarterback play. But that problem was supposed to be solved in 2024. Unfortunately, things seem to have gotten worse.
