Trading Down Is Your Dynasty Superpower: How and When to Make Your Move in Startups

Shawn Siegele explains why trading down in startups is your dynasty superpower . . . and breaks down 17 trades that illustrate the concept.

Colm Kelly and I have had a blast participating in an RV TriFlex dynasty startup with the Overtime community. By my count there have been 42 trades through the 13.03. Colm and I have been involved in 17.

I recently articulated three foundational trade principles in The Next Lamar Jackson, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Travis Kelce Are Waiting for You. Today’s Dynasty Workshop will investigate how these trades fit into our overall dynasty philosophy.

Perpetual Reloading and the Permanent Championship Window

Last season, Bjorn Yang-Vaernet and I executed an extreme trade-down approach and followed that up this Spring by employing the 2024 Rookie Draft Game Plan. As a result, we’ve been able to build the 5 Pillars That Turn a Dynasty Into an Empire.

The foundation pieces look like this.

QB RB WR TE Future Picks
Joe Burrow Bijan Robinson Zay Flowers Sam LaPorta R1
Jayden Daniels Rashee Rice Trey McBride 2 R2s
Bo Nix J. Smith-Njigba Brock Bowers 3 R3s

The roster includes 24 other players, including many young, intriguing options.

Here are a few of the trades that helped build the current roster:

  • The pick that would be DeVonta Smith for the pick that would be C.J. Stroud . . . and two future R2s
  • The pick that would be Bryce Young for the picks that would be J.K. Dobbins and Jordan Love.
  • The pick that would be Saquon Barkley for the pick that would be Sam LaPorta . . . and a future R1.
  • The pick that would be J.K. Dobbins for the pick that would be Brandon Aiyuk . . . and a future R3 and R4.
  • The pick that would be Dameon Pierce for the pick that would be Rashee Rice . . . and a future R2.
  • The pick that would be Mike Evans for the pick that would be Tank Dell . . . and a future R3.
  • The pick that would be Dalvin Cook for the pick that would be Cole Kmet . . . and a future R3.

Not every trade worked, of course, but the value we got from these selections eventually led us to names like Burrow and Daniels at QB, plus the addition of Bowers at TE.

Can Colm and I execute a similar plan in 2024 even as we draft against the RotoViz community?

A man . . . sees a unicorn cross his path and disappear. That in itself is startling, but there are precedents for mystical encounters of various kinds, or a choice of persuasions to put it down to fancy; until–“My God,” says a second man, “I must be dreaming, I thought I saw a unicorn.” At which point, a dimension is added that makes the…...
