Shawn Siegele explores how to attack the early rounds of Underdog’s fantastic new Superflex best ball tournament.
Colm Kelly and I have drafted Underdog and FFPC squads all spring on RotoViz Overtime, and I’m going to start the 2023 Best Ball Workshop by looking at our most recent foray, an entry in the Underdog Big Board: Superflex contest.
I love the rise of Superflex as it asks us to solve an interesting, evolving puzzle: Can we be creative in our strategy, flexible in our counters to emerging tactics, and yet avoid transgressing too far into builds that have delivered poor historical results?
Flexible Tactics to Dominate Underdog Best Ball Tournaments
Superflex allows you to pursue constructions you could never execute in any other format. You can use that flexibility as an advantage or disadvantage, but there’s no question it’s fun. Colm and I made last year’s FFPC SF finals by combining this freedom with an evidence-based approach.
We selected four QBs for that roster, and three of them finished among the top eight in SF win rate.
Jalen Hurts ended up breaking out from his position late in the first round, and Marcus Mariota scored over 200 points with an ADP just inside the top-100 picks. But it was Geno Smith who became just the second late-round QB since 2017 to post over 300 points. Squads with Smith averaged almost as many points as those with Patrick Mahomes, easily lapping the rest of the field.
All of which brings us back to the Underdog Superflex Big Board. How do we build off of the similarities in format and exploit the differences to reach a third consecutive best ball final?
