The calendar has flipped to a new year and the table is set for early dynasty startup drafts later this month. I’m working my way through a full rankings reboot even as I prepare for the incoming 2023 rookie class. Isn’t this a fun time of year?

For those of you who have been following our rankings and tiers process for the past year, you can also derive a rough estimate of the value we place on each player by using this breakdown.

Pick/tier equivalencies are as follows:

Tier 1: 3 R1
Tier 2: 2 R1
Tier 3: 1 R1, 1 R2
Tier 4: 1 R1
Tier 5: 2 R2
Tier 6: 1 R2, 1 R3
Tier 7: 1 R2
Tier 8: 1 R3
Tier 9: Roster spot in the 20’s
Tier 10: Roster spot in the 30’s
Tier 11: No roster spot

Assume a random, mid-round valuation on each of those picks. What I’ve enjoyed about this system is it’s inherently dynamic. The 2023 draft class has a better crop of quarterbacks than 2022 featured, which means the relative value of the picks is higher this year versus last year in Superflex formats (like RotoViz TriFlex).

Let’s kickstart the offseason with a review of the 2023 dynasty diamonds in Tier 1. How many quarterbacks will this tier feature? Are there any running backs, wide receivers, or tight ends?

2023 Dynasty Rankings and Tiers for Startup Drafts – Tier 1

1.01 – Josh Allen

The gargantuan dual threat has managed to become consistent and elite. He’ll finish the 2022 season as fantasy QB1 or QB2 for the third consecutive season. He averaged nearly 28 fantasy points per game over his past 48 contests. Failing a major let down in Week 17, he’ll also likely claim his third consecutive expected fantasy points crown.

As of this post, Allen is leading the NFL in air yards thrown and air yards completed. He’s also on track to post new career highs in single season passing yards and single season yards. If he can post seven touchdown over his final two games, he’ll also set a new single season total touchdown high. Allen has become what we once hoped Cam Newton could be.
