In Dynasty Trade Diary No. 4, Curtis Patrick shares why he traded away Matthew Stafford for Austin Ekeler in a Superflex Dynasty League.

2021 – Playoff No. 6 Seed, eliminated in Wild Card Round
This squad has been in the hunt since the inception of the league but hasn’t claimed a title yet. Check out the murderer’s row of fantasy analysts playing in my signature invitational league:
Me | Shawn Siegele | Ryan McDowell | Scott Barrett | JJ Zachariason | Rich Hribar | Pat Kerrane | Danny Kelly | Ian Hartitz | John Daigle | Tyler Buecher | TJ Calkins
It’s never going to be an easy league to win.
Like Shawn Siegele, I prefer to operate in the Perennial Championship Window, so tearing this squad to bits for rookie picks alone (despite its veteran-heavy makeup) simply isn’t an option. The goal here is to close a few deals to optimize my weekly starting lineup while also adding some additional draft capital to invest in the highly acclaimed 2023 class next year.
The position group I preferred to trade from was my quarterback room. With a start-two-per-week cap, being four or five deep at the position is an unnecessary luxury.
Shawn Siegele and I negotiated for about a week and had some loose, mutually beneficial framework built, but when push came to shove, he was really focused on acquiring Hurts, and that’s the one quarterback I didn’t have interest in moving. With talks fizzling in recent days, I was starting to think I’d have to wait until midseason to make big moves.
Luckily, I had the chance to have dinner two nights in a row with a few of my Black Crown Dynasty League mates at the Fantasy Football Expo in Canton, Ohio. It was awesome to get a chance to catch up in person with my former podcast partner (and dynasty Mount Rushmore analyst) Ryan McDowell, RotoViz legend Rich Hribar (now with Sharp Football), and John Daigle (4For4). On the second night, I closed two deals; one with Ryan,[1]I’ll review it in a future piece and one with John, which is covered in this article.
