The goal in any dynasty league is, or at least should be, to put yourself in what Shawn Siegele has called the Permanent Championship Window (PCW). Proponents of the PCW look at the debate between win-now and win-later strategies and ask, “why not both?” Suppose you could win in Year 1 … and also in Year 2, Year 3, and beyond. If winning now and winning later both sound appealing, the PCW might be for you. Shawn has explained elsewhere how perpetual reloading can enable you to remain always in the PCW. But where and how do we begin?
RotoViz Tri-Flex Dynasty – It All Starts with the Startup
Winning dynasty strategy always begins with the startup, and the PCW is no different. The ability to trade during the startup draft adds a key opportunity for achieving a roster built to enter the PCW. Ideally you would be able to come out of the draft with a roster built to win in Year 1 while retaining enough picks to reload in Year 2. Most dynasty players take those two goals to be opposed. If you want to win now, the best way to do it is to trade your future rookie picks for early startup picks. If you want to win later, the best way to do it is to trade your early startup picks for future rookie picks. But this is a false dichotomy.
Shawn and I are in the midst of an FFPC RotoViz Tri-Flex Dynasty Startup. Partly because some of our targets went earlier than we expected, we ended up trading out of almost all of our early startup picks. We didn’t pick at all until grabbing Javonte Williams at 4.06.[1]We did end up trading for Travis Etienne, who was picked at 4.03. This might sound like a way to punt Year 1. We’ve amassed 21 picks in the 2022 rookie/veteran draft, so at first glance, we appear to be playing for the future. However, we both believe this is a team built to win now. The key is that we also picked 19 players (to fill 20 roster spots) before the end of the 12th round.
