I’ve written about the tight end position several times in both this series and elsewhere. Fantasy managers know how valuable an elite option is at this position (Travis Kelce). Many managers’ approach is to either pay up for a high-end prospect or punt the position altogether and either stream it weekly or shoot their shot on a late option. Both strategies have merit. One young tight end scored his first touchdown of the season and is knocking on the door of becoming an elite option consistently.
Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert led the Eagles in most receiving categories in a Week 11 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Goedert caught five passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted six times, falling one behind Travis Fulgham. Goedert was a focal point of the offense and did well with the opportunities he was given. His touchdown was on a four-yard pass near the end of the fourth quarter. Goedert took a bit to look like himself again after missing time with an ankle injury and then playing inconsistently, but he was back to being Dallas Goedert in this one. He should be a TE1 for the remainder of the season, even if Zach Ertz (ankle) returns.
Promising Early Returns
In 2019, his second year in the league, Goedert finished as the TE10 while Ertz finished as the TE4. Now it doesn’t take much for a tight end to sneak into the back of the TE1 range in a given season. From 2017-2019, the point/game difference between the TE10 and TE20 was 2.7 points/game. That’s almost negligible over an entire season. Still, fantasy owners know how valuable the position is to the Eagles offense, and it has carried into this year.
To highlight the importance of the tight end position to the Eagles even further, Goedert, as the second option at tight end on his team, was top 10 at the position in targets, receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns last season. Ertz was top five in each of those respective categories.
