In previous pieces, I’ve mentioned the value and importance of practicing patient in fantasy football, particularly in dynasty leagues and when dealing with young tight ends. The tight end position is notoriously tricky to learn and understand at the professional level, and it takes more than just an imposing physical frame to experience fantasy success. For one young tight end, injuries and upside have combined to create a blurry picture. Now, with a new quarterback under center, Hunter Henry is poised to unleash his true potential.
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Hunter Henry scored his second touchdown of the season versus the Miami Dolphins in Week 10. Henry was also targeted six times on the evening and caught four balls for 30 yards. Henry has become touchdown dependent, but still remains a low-end TE1 at a position that has been tough on managers this season. Henry will look to help his managers against the New York Jets in a favorable matchup in Week 11.
A Tumultuous Start
Henry broke onto the tight end scene as a rookie back in 2016 for the then-San Diego Chargers by scoring eight touchdowns in 15 games. He followed that up with a four-touchdown campaign and 500-plus receiving yards as a sophomore but went on to miss the entire 2018 season. He recovered to finish as a top-10 tight end (TE9) last season and set career-high marks in targets, receptions, and receiving yards.
Despite the mid-tier production, Henry always left fantasy managers wanting more. His athletic profile and dominant presence on the field suggested there was more for him to give. However, injuries and lagging quarterback play only helped to hold him back. Now, with a budding star in rookie quarterback Justin Herbert under center, Henry seems ready to elevate his game to the next level.
