There is a growing pastime I have been enjoying over the last few years. At about this time of the season, trends are starting to emerge. Player roles are becoming more defined, and predictions are either being proven right or wrong. I have been working on targeting deeper dynasty assets, trading for them, and stashing them before they break out.
I don’t view these players as having fantasy value in the present. These are longer-term investments. One particular rookie scored his first NFL touchdown back in Week 2.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney caught three passes for 36 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown, in the Bears’ slim victory over the Giants 17-13. The rookie made a nice play in the end zone, coming back to the ball on a scramble play from quarterback Mitchell Trubisky that led to his first NFL score. Mooney has not put up fantasy-viable stats through the first two weeks but has made some plays through two games. If he can continue to produce, he could become worth monitoring on the waiver wire in the weeks ahead.
Small School; Big Potential
A fifth-round pick out of Tulane, Mooney sports blazing speed and above average explosiveness. Had he declared after his junior season, he could have raised his draft stock on the heels of a season that saw him post a 47% dominator rating and top 20 yards/reception.
His athletic profile comps him with guys like Tyler Lockett and John Brown. Both are smaller players with top-end speed and have experienced a high level of success in their NFL careers. His collegiate production comps bring up names like T.Y. Hilton and Emmanuel Sanders. Both have extended their careers into their 30s with middling success.
