In Lesson 5 of the 2020 Best Ball Workshop, Shawn Siegele looks at how to combine your tactics at the onesie positions. Conserving roster spots at quarterback, tight end, and defense can play an important role, but recent results suggest owners may give it too much emphasis. With the help of the Roster Construction Explorer, Shawn explains what you should do instead.
In best ball leagues, every position matters. In fact, QB, TE, and DEF offer a straightforward path to success, and yet they remain overlooked.
If you’re consistently making strong selections at running back and wide receiver but still don’t have the gaudy results you’d expect, the onesie positions may hold the key to unlocking those desired win rates.
For example, last year Christian McCaffrey scored 448 points and generated a win rate of 36.9%.
McCaffrey was a fantasy force unlike any we’ve seen in a generation, but almost two-thirds of his owners were still left asking themselves a difficult question: How did I own McCaffrey and still not win?
In many cases the answer may be an easy one — injuries ravaged the rest of your roster. But in other cases, you may not have selected the right positions in the right ranges after that early coup.
If you owned some of the winning RBs a season ago — like our top 2019 Zero RB candidates in Austin Ekeler (22.9%) and Miles Sanders (14.1%) — and still struggled, the Best Ball Workshop has answers.
Our first four lessons have centered on QB, TE, and DEF. We’ve focused on employing the right tactics and drafting the right players.
