Colonial Country Club has been a staple on tour with events held here dating back to the 1940s. It’s a par 70 that plays just a shade over 7,200 yards. The course features relatively small bentgrass greens. The field will have to navigate their way around 85 bunkers and four water hazards as they make their way around the track. Vegas Values
Jordan Spieth ($40) gets the name value bump from bookmakers this week but is reasonably priced on Yahoo. He’s around 14/1 at most shops for the Charles Schwab Challenge but is priced near guys in the 30/1 and up range. Spieth found his putter this past week at Bethpage, gaining over 10 strokes on the greens. While that isn’t sustainable, it might be the confidence boost and a step in the right direction for the former No. 1 golfer in the world to get back on the right path again.
There’s a pair of golfers at $33 whose odds suggest they don’t belong there. Emiliano Grillo and Matthew Fitzpatrick are sitting there at 50/1 in between golfers that are up as high as 100/1. Grillo is coming off of a Top 25 on a course that some might argue, he’d have no shot at competing on. Fitzpatrick has been stateside since February. He’s on a streak of seven straight made cuts and has hit over 60% of greens in regulation during that span.
Price Pivots
Jon Rahm ($48) is the most expensive golfer this week. Despite his missed cut last week, he’s been playing exceptionally well this season. Jhonattan Vegas ($31) and Xander Schauffele ($45) popped up as the closest pivots in the field at the Charles Schwab Challenge. They’ve each made two of their past three cuts, and Vegas has actually outperformed Rahm in greens in regulation over that timeframe. Xander has made 17 of 18 cuts and is hitting an average of 63% of GIR in his past three events.
Justin Rose ($47) is the defending champ at this event. His comp list is full of high priced golfers in this field. If we dip a bit lower, besides having a great name Matt Jones ($24) also pops up as a similar player to Rose over his past three events. Jones is hitting nearly 70% of GIR over his past three starts. We hadn’t seen a spiked putting performance from him in a while, but he rode a solid week on the greens to a fifth place finish at the Byron Nelson.
Rickie Fowler’s ($46) closest comp in the field is the aforementioned Matt Jones. But instead of copy-pasting what I just wrote about him, we’ll dip a bit lower on his list and hit Joel Dahmen ($31). Fowler is longer than Dahmen off the tee, but Dahmen has hit more fairways over their past three starts. Over that span, they’re virtually identical through the rest of their stats.
