Editor’s note: Conor O’Driscoll is too humble to say this himself, but he could justifiably be called the top FFPC best ball tournament player in the entire world. After taking down the inaugural 1-QB Tournament in 2021, he returned two teams to the finals the next season . . . and re-returned two more teams to the finals in 2024! Here he explains how he finished second in the FFPC Superflex Best Ball Tournament in 2024 and almost banked another $100,000 prize. If you want to improve your FFPC best ball tournament results, Conor is the man to follow.
I almost won $100,000 again.
Heading into the last night (MNF DET @ SF) of the 2024 FFPC SF finals, I was languishing near the bottom of the table. However, I had Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams, and George Kittle still to play. Officially, both reality teams had nothing to play for. The 49ers were eliminated from playoff contention, and the game had no influence on the Lions’ playoff seeding. Luckily for me, Dan Campbell had zero intention of taking his foot off the gas: “We’re bringing everything that we have to this game.”
The game finished as a 40-34 all-time fantasy finals game. My quartet combined for almost a hundred points. Kittle recorded his eighth catch in the dying seconds of the game to secure second place for my squad by 0.48 points.
Cynics at this point will respond to the title with “Luck!” But I would point out that the good luck was balanced on the other side of the ledger by losing stars in CeeDee Lamb, Chuba Hubbard, and effectively De’Von Achane (neutered by the downgrade from Tua Tagovailoa to Tyler Huntley for the fantasy championship). Moreover, while success in fantasy does often involve luck, it also involves putting your teams in a position to benefit from luck and randomness. Getting lucky with injuries and the timing of good performances is crucial, but so are the roster construction principles that enable your team to get lucky in the right ways in the first place.
