As a drafter, my style is a little unique in that I place less emphasis on having my own player takes and more on more general drafting skills. I want to focus on being able to:
- Navigate tiers within positions effectively
- Make good decisions on risers and fallers
- Position myself where I’m able to take the best values in the middle rounds without getting locked out due to positional need
Partially because of this focus, I find it a challenge to have a deep knowledge of the entire player pool. I rely on rankings for this, particularly before August. Analyzing rankings so that I can utilize them to build an effective draft strategy is also important. One way to do this is to compare rankings with ADP to identify who the suggested targets are.
Crush Your Draft By Understanding the Relationship of Ranks to ADP
I’m using a mathematical technique called log differences to calculate differences between the RotoViz rankings and ADP. It’s equivalent to the percentage difference between rank and ADP. This is useful because being three spots ahead of ADP in the first round is more meaningful than in the 12th. (I’m using log instead of percentage because the results are a little easier to read in instances where the ranks have players much higher than ADP. For example, being 200% above ADP isn’t really an intuitive answer.)
