With former Buffalo RB Devin Singletary headed to the Texans, the Bills beefed up their running back room by adding Damien Harris on Monday. Harris will add a thunder element to the lightning of James Cook and Nyheim Hines. Can he also add some thunder to your fantasy squad?
Harris has had an up-and-down career after being drafted in 2019. He’s struggled to stay on the field, essentially red-shirting his rookie season and playing in 10 and 11 games in 2020 and 2022. Sandwiched between those years was a very good 2021 season in which Harris ended up the PPR RB14, highlighted by 15 TDs on the ground.
The Fit In Buffalo
With all those TDs scored in 2021, the immediate thought is about the touchdown opportunity Harris could have in Buffalo. As the banger in this new RB committee, Harris would profile to get the first crack at goal-line duties in an offense that should spend plenty of time in the red zone. But then we remember Josh Allen at QB and his effect on RB goal-line scores. Let’s take a look at Devin Singletary from last year, whose role Harris is stepping into. Using the Stealing Signals tool, we can look at all the RBs who had at least 600 snaps last season.
One of the first things we notice is that Singletary ranks quite high in his number of raw snaps over the season, actually tallying over 700. Amongst those other backs with 700-plus snaps though, Singletary is nowhere close in goal line usage with 19 green zone touches. Amongst the larger group of 600-plus snap RBs, there are others that are close to Singletary’s green-zone touch number. However, if you keep the offenses in mind when comparing, Buffalo afforded Singletary many more trips to the green zone than any of the others with a comparable GZ touch number. Part of this may just be a reflection on Singletary as a player. But Allen at QB certainly factors in. Allen scored seven TDs on the ground last year and is always a threat to punch it in himself when Buffalo gets in close.
Other team factors could also limit Harris’ touches.
