Shawn Siegele drafts from the 1.11 in the 2022 Apex Experts League and waits a long, long time to select a running back. Is this the best way to overcome a bad draft slot, or does 2022 have a different solution in store?
We’ve been doing a lot of Extreme Anchor and Upgraded Hyperfragile content for Underdog leagues in 2022. If you’re not a Zero RB drafter, we have you covered. But if you’re a Zero RB enthusiast, this is your day and all is right with the world.
The 2022 Apex Experts League is an annual event run by Mike Braude that features a murderer’s row of industry talent. Take a look at the field along with their first-round picks.
Apex is a pure PPR format that uses a starting lineup with 2-RB, 3-WR, 1-TE, and 1-Flex. If you’ve ever wanted to deploy a Zero RB draft, this is the place to do it.
The “Bad Draft Slot” Lessons Have Crushed
Without getting into spoilers, this draft reminded me of the 2020 FFPC Main Event draft where Blair Andrews and I waited until Round 11 to select our first RB and finished 31st overall.
In both cases, draft slot played a role. To win in 2020 we used the intel from the Range of Outcomes and Win the Flex tools to craft an aggressive, creative, and productive plan for late slots. Depressed About Your Draft Slot? became a call to Zero RB arms and a template for crushing slot expectation.
A year later, Blair and I again had the 1.12 in an FFPC Best Ball Tournament team with Colm Kelly. That squad finished second place overall in the tournament behind only best ball guru Conor O’Driscoll. Last year’s draft plan, Stuck With a Bad Slot? This Evidence-Based Plan Flips the Script to Create Silly Win Rates, was built directly from that tournament team.
Today we’ll use the RV tools again, learn what history can tell us about preferred builds, and tackle the new hurdles that apply specifically to 2022.
