Shawn Siegele discusses the strategic insights, tactical decisions, and player targets necessary to build a Hyperfragile juggernaut.
RotoViz Overtime listeners are being treated to all of our usual content this month, plus a flurry of draft shows. Colm Kelly and I recently built a Hyperfragile dream team in the Best Ball Mania III tournament. We drafted that squad from the 1.02. Later that day, I selected another Hyperfragile team from the 1.10.
If you’ve read Conor O’Driscoll’s fantastic Fixing Hyperfragile, you know that this type of RB-heavy build can be successful in Underdog . . . if you do it right. Most RB-heavy drafters fall into a handful of advance-rate destroying traps. We’ll look to avoid those in our drafts.
Conor also recently explored the ramifications for RB drafting in half-PPR formats by comparing the positional strengths and weaknesses using Blair Andrews’ Win the Flex tool. Managing the pitfalls of the Dead Zone, harnessing the upside of RB flex options in half-PPR, and constructing a roster with the right balance to win a major tournament is a high-wire act. Doing it while hitting the other key pieces of a Hyperfragile build can feel like juggling with knives.
Translation: it’s an absolute blast.
In today’s Best Ball Workshop, I’ll use the Underdog Roster Construction Explorer, Underdog Advance Rater Explorer, and the actionable intel from 13 previous lessons to compare and contrast two Hyperfragile teams. Did Colm and I pull off the perfect draft and position ourselves to win one of three prizes worth at least $1 million?
