We all love to have our receivers we draft to be attached to the best offenses with the best quarterbacks, and in these best ball tournaments we love to stack them. But it’s important not to reach for these stacks. We need to be conscious of value even when drafting for upside.
One way to do this is to arbitrage an attractive player profile by finding cheaper ways to make the same bet across your best ball portfolio. I recently went through this with Allen Robinson and found three substantially cheaper options.
But it can also be done by finding players in high-powered or ascending offenses who are a lot cheaper than their teammates. Last season, many people were excited to stack the Raiders by drafting Darren Waller or Henry Ruggs and pairing them with Derek Carr. Hunter Renfrow was going outside the top 200 picks, but ended up being the Raiders pass-catcher you wanted. So how do we find the next Renfrow?
The options I’m highlighting all check a few of the same boxes:
- Playing in an exciting offense
- Easy to stack with the quarterback (cheaper than trendier teammates)
- Contingent value
