Best Ball platforms are starting to release their big tournaments: Underdog’s Best Ball Mania 3 tournament, Drafters’ Million Best Ball Championship, FFPC’s Best Ball Tournament, and DraftKings will likely follow soon as well. Michael Dubner examines when we should draft our best ball teams in order to maximize our odds of finishing in first-place.

There are a lot of nuances that go into winning a best ball tournament. We have to pick the right players within the right roster construction, consider teammate and playoff opponent stacks, and have luck on our side. It’s important to consider every edge we can optimize in order to beat hundreds of thousands of opponents and draft the million dollar team. The very first decision drafters make — oftentimes an afterthought despite its profound effects on your rosters — is: When is the optimal time to draft best ball tournament teams?
