PGA DFS: Colonial CC Course Preview and Trends

We’re heading back to Texas this week for the Charles Schwab Challenge. The course is a familiar one. Colonial Country Club has been a staple on tour since Ben Hogan and Sam Snead won events held here in the 1940s. It’s a par 70 that plays just a shade over 7,200 yards. The course features relatively small greens (4,500 square feet) that are bentgrass. The field will have to navigate their way around 85 bunkers and four water hazards.

PAST WINNERS

Golfer Year Winning Score DraftKings Points
Justin Rose 2018 -20 123.5
Kevin Kisner 2017 -10 100.5
Jordan Spieth 2016 -17 116
Chris Kirk 2015 -12 115
Adam Scott 2014 -9 101

OFF THE TEE

Since 2010, there have been 48 golfers that finished in the top five of DK scoring. Looking at those golfers, there’s a clear gap in importance between accuracy and distance off the tee. Of that group of 48 golfers, just seven managed to crack the top 10 in driving distance compared to 15 that hit that number in driving accuracy. Even if you zoom out to golfers hitting top 25 in either of those stats, accuracy beats out distance 25-19.

Driving Accuracy Rank (Last 24 Rounds) Golfer (Salary)
1 Chez Reavie ($8,300)
2 Paul Casey ($9,300)
3 Emiliano Grillo ($8,700)
4 Colt Knost ($6,200)
5 Kevin Kisner ($9,200)
6 Michael Thompson ($6,800)
7 Brian Gay ($6,400)
8 Jim Furyk ($7,300)
9 Joel Dahmen ($8,200)
10 Sungjae Im ($7,700)

ON APPROACH

This is a ball-striking course through and through. Since 2010, a golfer’s greens in regulation percent explains about 30% of their DK scoring during this event. During that span, there were 237 golfers that finished inside of the top 20 in DK scoring at Colonial. Nearly 55% (128-of-237) of top 20 scorers finished in the top 25 of GIR for the week here.

GIR Rank (Last 24 Rounds) Golfer (Salary)
1 KH Lee ($6,900)
2 Jason Kokrak ($8,900)
3 Ian Poulter ($9,100)
4 Paul Casey ($9,300)
5 Jim Furyk ($7,300)
6 Joel Dahmen ($8,200)
7 Charley Hoffman ($7,600)
8 Jon Rahm ($11,200)
9 Jhonattan Vegas ($7,300)
10 Byeong Hun An ($7,500)

Can Kyle Pitts Pay Off His ADP? Atlanta Falcons Fantasy Football Multiverse

The idea of the multiverse is fascinating to me. You change one small thing in one timeline and it breaks off and affects things down the road in profound ways. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that has Earth-shattering, Thanos-snapping implications. In fantasy football, it’s just my fancy way of saying that a range of outcomes exists. My goal for this series is to pick a…...
