The Tiger roars are still echoing through Augusta while the Tour makes it’s way north to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The course is a familiar one as the event has been played here at Harbour Town GL since 1969. It’s a par 71 that plays right at 7,100 yards. The greens are the smallest in my database on the entire tour. They are TifEagle bermudagrass and run slower than average. The course is a Pete Dye design and features 54 bunkers and 12 water hazards. Fairways are relatively easy to hit compared to a regular Tour stop, but the field will average about seven percent fewer greens in regulation which leads to five fewer birdie putts across the tournament.

OFF THE TEE
In general, the fairways are easy to hit at Harbour Town. Golfers will pull less than driver off the tee on many occasions since you really need to be in position off the tee to have any shot of hitting these small greens. Since 2010, there have been 49 golfers to finish in the top five of DK scoring. Over that span, just 17 (35 percent) have finished in the top 25 of distance compared to 25 (51 percent) that hit the same threshold in accuracy off the tee.

At an average of 3,700 square feet, these greens are incredibly difficult to hit. If we take a look at that same group of 49 golfers that finished top five in DK scoring, the importance of hitting greens in regulation really shows. Since 2010, 37 (73 percent) of those golfers have finished in the top 25 of greens in regulation.
