When The Devy Breaks: Tough Test For Josh Adams

Elevated expectations are often the precursor to disappointment.

Heading into last weekend, the Florida State/Alabama game was billed as the biggest opener in college football history. Instead of a matchup for the ages, we got a (somewhat) typical Alabama slow-burn win and a devastating injury to Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois.

There were other injuries which we’ll dive in to shortly, as well as a preview of a very strong upcoming slate of games featuring some top-end devy talent.

RECAP

Francois suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee in Saturday’s loss, a setback to both his NFL future as well as Florida State’s anticipated title push in 2017. Freshman three-star recruit James Blackman now takes over, which is likely to affect wide receiver Auden Tate’s production. We could see the Seminoles lean heavily on the run game, at least initially, signaling more opportunity for running back Cam Akers after he recorded a team-high 10 carries last week.

Georgia QB Jacob Eason also injured his knee last Saturday, a sprain which will keep him out of this week’s game against Notre Dame. In his place, my No. 1 ranked QB for 2020, Jake Fromm, will step in. Fromm completed 67 percent of his throws last week but will face a much tougher test this weekend in South Bend.

And finally, Indiana WR Nick Westbrook and Tennessee WR Jauan Jennings were both lost for the season in their respective openers. Junior WR Simmie Cobbs put up a 11/149/1 line on 17 targets against Ohio State while sophomore WR Marquez Callaway went for 4/115/2 against Georgia Tech. Both are now squarely on the devy watch list.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK

Notre Dame junior RB Josh Adams rushed for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns last week against Temple. This week, he faces the Georgia Bulldogs. I’ve been high on Adams all summer, believing he has the requisite size and speed to hold off the likes of Tony Jones Jr. and Dexter Williams. Adams saw 19 carries to just six for both Jones Jr. and Williams last week. With 21 receptions last season, Adams isn’t a liability in the passing game, either. He’s flying under the radar right now, but that could soon change.

Although Kyle Pollock and I talked about him on the latest episode of the RotoViz Radio College Football Show, I have to mention Ohio State freshman RB J.K. Dobbins. With sophomore RB Mike Weber injured, Dobbins put on a show against Indiana rushing for 181 yards.

Weber’s anticipated return against Oklahoma complicates matters, but even if Dobbins slides into a time-share situation, he’s one of the best 2020 RBs on the board.

Wyoming’s Josh Allen wasn’t the only QB to put up a dud last week. Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham,  a preseason darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate, completed just 58 percent of his throws against Georgia Southern. While Clemson’s vaunted defensive line will likely give Auburn’s offensive line all they can handle Saturday night, I will be watching closely to see if Stidham can show signs of improvement against much stiffer competition.

The USC Trojans’ passing game is far from a finished product, but junior RB Ronald Jones was in top form Saturday against Western Michigan, rushing for 159 yards and 3 TDs. Jones added weight this offseason but showed no ill effects.

Jones is my No. 4 ranked RB in the upcoming 2018 class, so his strong performance wasn’t a major surprise. Entering Pac-12 play against Stanford on Saturday, we could see more of the same from Jones as the young Trojans WR corps rounds into shape.

I’ve included my devy rankings for 2018, 2019, and 2020 to the article this week, so feel free to hit me up on Twitter or the message boards to let me know what you think.
