Draft Strategy

What You Need to Know Before Your 2017 Auction Draft

I recently participated in an “expert” auction for The Huddle of USA Today Sports. While I wouldn’t call myself an expert, I’ve spent a great deal of time theorizing on auctions. When not writing about football, I’m a CPA. Budgeting, risk evaluation, maximization of dollars spent to benefit received, and maximization of dollars spent to revenue produced are concepts I deal with every day. As an industry, we make a lot of comparisons between fantasy football and financial markets. Often, I find these comparisons to be a little off base. Having said that, there are economic concepts that apply to auction drafts. This definitely contributes to my interest in them. I also drafted in the 2017 RotoViz Mock and a handful of other leagues. I’ll start with a couple of high-level concepts that I’ve written about before and then provide some general thoughts. I wrote two articles last summer that will expand upon these concepts: Using Basic Economics to Approach Your Auction Draft and Using ‘Auction Tiers’ for Last Minute Prep.
