FantasyLabs sponsored our in-house weekly prognostication contest this year, for which we’re grateful. We had fun and improved as daily fantasy football players, thanks to the great tools provided by FantasyLabs. More importantly, hopefully we helped you get better results in your GPPs.

Now that the season is over, we can do a quick recap. But first, the Week 17 results.

In the spirit of RotoVizI included some other numbers in this table, which is sorted by total score. Because not every writer participated every week, I included their average score, as well as the total number of weeks they participated. The positive and negative columns just tell you how many weeks they had a positive or negative total score,1 and then the percent of weeks they produced a positive score.

Some takeaways:

  • Mr. Siegele not only produced the highest total and average scores, he also produced a positive score in all 17 weeks.
  • John Gambill isn’t just a PGA whiz. He led the contest for much of the season, and finished second overall.
  • High stakes player and RotoViz Radio host Jacob Rickrode finishes third, less than a point/week behind Mr. Gambill.
  • DFS Value Plays author Tyler Buecher was just eight points behind Mr. Rickrode.
  • Dollars-per-opportunity guru George Fitopoulos only participated in 13 weeks, but had the second-highest weekly average.
  • Of those that participated in all 17 weeks, occasional contributor, tweeter extraordinaire, and charts-on-charts guru Mike Beers had the most consistent picks (lowest standard deviation), while Mr. Fitopoulos and On the Daily host Ben Gretch had the most variance (highest standard deviation) in their picks.
  • Every writer produced a positive seasonal score and a positive weekly score in more than 56 percent of weeks.

Here are the winners by week.

WEEK WRITER SCORE
1 Jacob Rickrode 57.7
2 John Gambill 48.97
3 Blair Andrews 49.24
4 George Fitopoulos 40.25
5 Ben Gretch 45.63
6 Jacob Rickrode 32.42
7 Drew Heinl 47.69
8 Aaron Butler 33.42
9 Scott Smith 33.13
10 Shawn Siegele 36.26
11 Tyler Buecher 35.07
12 George Fitopoulos 43.8
13 Curtis Patrick 43.05
14 George Fitopoulos 48.9
15 Jason Lewis 27.18
16 Ben Gretch 54.14
17 Shawn Siegele 50.21

Repeat winners include Ben Gretch, Jacob Rickrode, Shawn Siegele (twice each), and George Fitopoulos (three times).

If you glanced at that table and thought our performance dipped around mid season, you were right. Here’s the average score by week.

capture

That could just be noise, but I thought it was interesting enough to pass on. For the season, our average score per week was 12.9 points, so you can see that we did much better early on, before rebounding a bit at the end of the year.

If you’re curious about which players we recommended, there’s a complete table below. Here are the most popular at each position.

  • QB – Kirk Cousins – 28 times
  • RB – Jordan Howard – 21 times
  • WR – Allen Robinson & Tyrell Williams – 15 times each
  • TE – Delanie Walker – 34 times
  • DEF – New England Defense – 37 times

  1. Dennis says:

Great job, thank you CK and participants. This was the most consistently helpful feature all year for me

  2. Dennis says:

@FF_Contrarian Would you be willing to write up/ share some of your process or what you learned for these plays of the week? Or how you may have honed your research skills over the year/s?

I was so impressed by some of these suggestions. Zach Zenner, week 17, Cardinals, and Patriots D, marquise Lee, as just under the chalk plays that turned into home runs... im guessing there were plenty of lessons learned from people you did not play etc. be exciting to learn how you found success on this endeavor
thanks for the tips as always

  3. To start with, I can't say enough about the tremendous tools that FantasyLabs provided. That's not a surprise with the minds they have there. Bales is awesome, and then they work with some of the top DFS guys in the world.

So I spent a decent amount of time with their tools each week, some early in the week to get a feel of plays I might want to use, and then I'd come back to it again later in the week and narrow down the choices.

I also did a lot of work with our Weekly Projection Machine. (We also have a weekly internal contest for PM results, which creates accountability and fosters competition.) The PM is a ridiculously good tool. Beyond the natural competitiveness of wanting to perform well in the contests and the important goal of providing good content to the site, using these different tools also helped in setting lineups for my seasonal teams.

The players who showed up well in the FL tools and in the PM (and GLSP) frequently performed quite well.

Any time you come out ahead against such a strong group of minds, it's important to realize that one of the key elements was likely luck. But I do think these are tremendous tools, and I do recommend that subscribers at least occasionally use the public version of the PM for themselves. It has a crazy amount of information and really helps in the process of making strong weekly selections.
