In limited playing time, newcomer Austin Collie appeared healthy and effective while emerging as a veteran who could step up and climb up an uncertain depth chart for a team in search of legitimate candidates to fill front-line roles at the position.

With three of their top wideouts injured, the 49ers started unproven Marlon Moore opposite Anquan Boldin at receiver Friday night in their 10-6 exhibition loss to Denver.

Austin Collie’s problem has never been that he can’t play. The guy can produce on the football field. Instead Collie’s problem has been that concussions have always held him back. From a risk standpoint, Collie is a fine bet given that he’ll cost almost nothing to acquire. But you also know there’s a good chance you get nothing out of him this year. Specifically the increased attention paid to concussions is a problem because Collie has heightened odds of being suspected of having a concussion based on his history. More and more players are being diagnosed with concussions which increases his odds of being diagnosed with one, which increases the odds that his season ends early.

For a 5th or 6th WR, you could do a lot worse than Collie even with the concussion risk. You probably won’t find anyone else in that range with Collie’s history of getting into the end zone and all receivers have some risk. But just know when you draft him that you’re possibly just renting him for a few weeks.
