Using the Snake Draft App to Dominate Your League

You may have heard about our new Snake Draft App. It helps you plan for upcoming drafts in a unique and powerful way. Today I’ll provide a concrete example of how to use the App. My scenario may differ from yours, but the lessons still apply. Try the App using your league settings.

Fleaflicker is a free fantasy football hosting site (our RotoViz Dynasty League is hosted there). If you play in a league with default “Flea-eligible” rules, your team automatically competes against all other Fleaflicker leagues with the same settings. I’ll use the Snake Draft App to create a draft plan designed for Fleaflicker.

The Situation

First, the default settings:

  • 12 team league
  • Standard, non-PPR scoring
  • 4 points/passing TD, 1 point/20 passing yards
  • Total Roster 15 positions: 8 starters, 7 bench
  • Starting lineup 8 positions: 1QB, 1 RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1RB/WR/TE Flex, 1K, 1DST

Now let’s go to the Snake Draft App and make our inputs. For the rest of this exercise, I’ll assume:

  • that I’ll draft a Defense and Kicker in the last 2 rounds, and just use waivers to replace them for bye weeks.
  • I’ll take a backup QB in round 13; Alex Smith is usually available there.
  • I’m drafting from the 6th position.

So, I need to draft 12 players to fill up my roster. I want to be fairly certain I’ll actually get the players I target, so I’ll bump the ADP Confidence up to 80%. Here are my initial Snake App settings.

Here are the players the App suggests I target.

The first column shows the draft round (remember, rounds 13-15 are already accounted for). The second column shows my overall pick number. The third column shows the ADP at which I’m 80% likely to get the targeted player. The final column shows projected points for the season for that player. This is a solid lineup, and I could stop here.

But let’s make extra sure I’m getting the best team possible, and double-check our lineup for any red flags. First, the App suggests I take both Chris Givens and Kendall Wright. If you’ve been reading RotoViz, you know Shawn Siegele suggests not having more than one small WR on your roster. I’m also not sure about drafting Jonathan Stewart, since his ankle injury isn’t 100% recovered yet. The Snake Draft App allows me to “blacklist” these players to remove them from consideration. I’ll blacklist Stewart and Chris Givens. The App updates my draft plan to look like this.

Round Overall Conf. Based ADP Player POS Proj. Pts
1.00 6.00 7.00 Ray Rice RB 225.85
2.00 19.00 20.00 Reggie Bush RB 187.32

12.00 139.00 143.00 Kendall Wright WR 110.31

Now I see the App has given me Santonio Holmes, who may not be back to form this year. The App also suggests Roddy White. He’s been one of my favorite reality players for years, but he’s a trap player, and I’m not sure I want two older WRs back to back. In fact, Wayne’s efficiency is on the decline. So I’ll blacklist Roddy White (sorry bro), Reggie Wayne, and Santonio Holmes. Here’s my new suggested lineup.

In this lineup, Tom Brady and Andrew Luck are both trap players, and I don’t want both the smallish Shorts and Wright. I’ll keep Shorts, and dump Wright. After blacklisting Brady and Wright, and whitelisting my favorite QB, Russell Wilson, who is better than Luck (I can get him at the same ADP, so the rest of my lineup is unaffected), my next projected lineup gave me Eddie Lacy. Relying on Lacy might be insane, so after blacklisting him, here’s my final projected lineup.

Conclusion – and Challenge

I like it. Reggie Bush could be the 2013 Fantasy MVP Runner Up. Andre Johnson doesn’t care that you think he’s old. Last we checked, Steve Johnson has back-to-back-to-back 1000 yard seasons. Eric Decker is one of our recommended redraft targets. So is Brian Hartline. Denarius Moore makes a good late round WR. And Pettigrew is overlooked – but part of a pass happy offense. I feel confident drafting this team. If you don’t, or if your league settings are different, try the Snake Draft App for yourself. Can you come up with a better lineup?

I just screwed around optimizing from the 9th pick in a half ppr (my situation in my main league)...the app is obsessed with me going RB-RB-RB from that spot.

Seems like the app loves RB-RB-RB early because I am in the perfect position to pick up Viz favs Colston/Decker/Stevie/Mike W in rounds 4/5/7/8.
